Afghans for Progressive Thinking (APT) organized the 2015 National Debate Tournament.
The tournament was the largest of its kind. We hosted more than 500 people in 3 days as debaters, adjudicators, observers and guests. The tournament started with an exhibition debate in the opening ceremony organized at Safi Landmark Hotel. The tournament continued in two full days of competitive debate at Karwan University. The final rounds of the tournament were conducted at Safi Landmark Hotel before the closing ceremony for the tournament. This tournament featured two lingual categories of competitive debate which shaped the main action. In the Dari section, 120 students from 22 universities and institutes along with students and members of 3 Civil Society organizations, from 5 provinces of Afghanistan actively competed in 4 preliminary rounds as a result of which top 16 teams progressed to the quarter final rounds. The outcome of quarter finals allowed only eight teams to proceed to the semifinals as a result of which 4 finalist teams reached the final and competed for the championship. Meanwhile, the English category consisted of two rounds, the first round was a knockout round which allowed top 4 teams to progress to the final of the English section. The tournament concluded with the award ceremony in which we acknowledged the champion teams, finalists, semifinalists, quarterfinalists, the best speakers of the tournament, and our dignified Adjudicators. We extended our gratitude to the contributions and efforts of all individuals and parties involved, especially Karwan University for providing their campus as the venue for the tournament. We take this opportunity to, once again, thank our Adjudicators and Volunteers who always encourages us with their commitment to strengthening public debate in Afghanistan.
